Introducing Grid/Hybrid Solar Electric Systems to Electrical Contractors

Advanced systems that can store solar electricity for emergency and 24/7 use, and “zero out” grid usage, are the future of green technology upgrades for commercial and residential customers

ARLINGTON, Wash.--()--OutBack Power Technologies, Inc., a designer and manufacturer of advanced power electronics for renewable energy, backup power and mobile applications, will showcase its newest Grid/Hybrid photovoltaic (PV) systems at the NECA Show, September 27 to 30 in Chicago. With its award-winning Radian family of inverters, advanced energy storage technology, AC-coupling upgrade solution, and complete UL-1741 rated systems, OutBack Power delivers next-generation solar for residential, commercial and municipal users, and provides solar upgrade opportunities for electrical contractors, allowing them to get involved in this growing industry without the hassle of installing new solar panels on customer rooftops.

Solar-equipped homes in the U.S. equal greater than 8,000 megawatts of installed solar electric capacity. This installed market presents a promising upgrade opportunity for Grid/Hybrid technology and is a great point of entry into the solar business for electricians.

Electrical contractors have great upgrade opportunity since nearly all of the more than 300,000 residential solar installations and the vast majority of commercial ones in the U.S. today are simple grid-tied systems, which means they can save users money when the sun’s shining—and that’s it. Users still must rely on grid electricity at night. And during an outage, they are without power just like everyone else, as many owners of solar-equipped homes on the East Coast discovered after Superstorm Sandy, which left literally millions of watts “up on the roof” and unusable by the affected residents below. By adding energy storage to these systems, solar users are able to store the surplus energy they create for times when energy prices are at their peak, when the sun is down, or in the event of a power outage.

“Energy insecurity plus changes in utility and government incentive policies means that smart, hybrid systems with energy storage capabilities is a long-term, fast-growth area,” said Harvey Wilkinson, general manager at OutBack Power. “Solar-equipped homes in the U.S. equal greater than 8,000 megawatts of installed solar electric capacity. This installed market presents a promising upgrade opportunity for Grid/Hybrid technology and is a great point of entry into the solar business for electricians.”

As the leader in off-grid systems around the globe, OutBack Power is an expert in PV/solar power conversion systems that go far beyond grid-tied systems and deliver clean, reliable electricity 24/7. This proven technology is behind OutBack’s AC-coupling package, which adds smart-grid and electricity storage capabilities to any PV/solar electric system without requiring solar panel work.

“As a business, it is exactly in the ‘sweet spot’ of electrical contractors,” said Mark Cerasuolo, director of marketing and training. “The electrician upgrades the existing solar electric system with a second, smarter inverter/charger and a battery bank for energy storage. All the work is done near the electrical panel, integrating the AC-coupling upgrade into the existing system. OutBack is the only company with a UL-1741-compliant, end-to-end solution, including power conversion components, batteries and storage rack, from a single brand, which makes for easier system design and technical support. OutBack Power’s AC-coupling systems make it easy for electricians to add solar to their business and provide greater, long-term value for their customers.”

The power behind solar for contractors

OutBack Power products and systems are preferred by “fault-intolerant” users around the globe because of their industry-leading reliability, durability and proven performance. OutBack Power Steps up Support for Solar Installers with Half-price Battery Shipping, NABCEP Certificate Training

Program for direct battery shipping within five days improves jobsite success in growing solar market

Future-perfect technology in new Radian inverters helps installers meet evolving needs of solar power customers

April 17, 2014 09:01 AM Eastern Daylight Time – OutBack Power Technologies, Inc., a designer and manufacturer of advanced power electronics for renewable energy, backup power and mobile applications, today launched OnSite Direct, part of the company’s commitment to supporting installers at the industry’s front line by making it much easier to manage delivery of the most logistically challenging system component: the battery bank. With OnSite Direct, battery shipping costs are always cut in half, and fresh batteries always ship within five days of order acceptance.

Often the heaviest and most difficult elements to handle in solar or renewable energy systems, batteries present challenges from point A (distributors) to point B (job sites). Batteries deteriorate just sitting on the shelf, and battery freight costs are usually higher than any other system element. For installers, OnSite Direct eliminates long battery delivery lead times to renewable energy projects, and the ongoing program makes life easier for distributors who no longer have to worry about warehousing and inventory turns on batteries. OnSite Direct is part of OutBack Power’s ongoing commitment to solar installers through the best products, support and training in the industry.

Training is as important as products and support in an industry where solar adoption is growing at a breakneck pace. In the U.S. Southwest, residents in California, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona are adopting solar to take advantage of state incentives and the steady levels of sunshine year round. As solar penetration grows, the demand for effective design and maintenance from knowledgeable labor is also booming, with the Solar Foundation and NABCEP estimating a 30 percent job growth increase in the sector with more than 120,000 people already employed in solar technology.

“When designing a new system for customers, any delay can be disastrous, especially if they’re counting on solar as their primary source of electricity,” said Eric Pipkin, founder of Pipkin Solar and U.S. Solar Mount. “OutBack Power was the perfect choice for a project we completed for a ranch in Texas, not only because of the equipment’s ability to handle demanding loads onsite, but its arrival time helped us have the system ready within a week, making the customers very happy with the final result.”

OnSite Direct’s ramp-up coincides with OutBack Power’s opening of its newest training center in Phoenix, furthering OutBack’s dedication to educating electrical contractors and solar installers. With more than 200 installer graduates to date, the OutBack Power Certificate Training Program is an intensive three-day class covering everything from solar photovoltaic (PV) system fundamentals to system specification and sizing, design, installation, testing and commissioning. Training participants earn continuing education credits toward their PV Installer Certification or Solar PV Recertification from the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP).

“As the leading brand in off-grid power conversion products, OutBack Power already enjoys strong relationships with the industry’s finest installers and distributors,” said Brandon Provalenko, director, North American sales for OutBack Power. “Consequently, we have to hit a high standard to create training and support programs with value and relevance to such a group, and the sold-out Certificate Training Program monthly classes show that we’ve succeeded in that area. OnSite Direct and our second training center in Phoenix will provide installers with even more tools for technical and business success.”

The OutBack Power Certificate Training Program roster of instructors includes Jason Lerner, founder of Waldron Power and Light Company, who has been designing and installing off-grid solar electric systems since 1994 and is an instructor with Solar Energy International (SEI). The class includes 17 learning modules, five learning labs, two hands-on practice sessions focused on system sizing and field wiring, and a final project that ties all of the session concepts together. Successful graduates earn 18 contact hours toward the NABCEP PV Installer Certification or 12 hours toward the NABCEP Solar PV Recertification.

Following sold-out OutBack Power Certificate Training Program sessions in its Arlington facility, the company is now accepting registration for the next class, which will be held in Phoenix from April 22 to April 24, 2014. Phoenix training registration fee is $399 per student through May. To register, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

OutBack Power Helps Homeowners Future-Proof Solar Power Investments

GridZero energy balancing and Advanced Battery Charging technology in Radian inverters addresses evolving needs of solar power

GridZero energy balancing and Advanced Battery Charging technology in Radian inverters addresses evolving needs of solar power consumers

ARLINGTON, WA, April 24, 2014 --OutBack Power Technologies, Inc., a designer and manufacturer of advanced power electronics for renewable energy, backup power and mobile applications, today announced it will showcase its newest, consumer-facing Radian inverters during the Pacific Expos Home, Garden and Products Show in Honolulu, HI this week. OutBack’s Radian inverters include advanced GridZero energy balancing technology and Advanced Battery Charge profiles compatible with lithium-ion, lead-acid and other emerging battery designs. Both of OutBack’s latest innovations ensure homeowners benefit from “future-perfect” solar power and energy storage investments, regardless of changes in incentives or utility policies.

“With constant shifts in incentives, utility programs and grid rates, consumers considering an investment in solar power need to know that the systems they purchase today will deliver the energy they need tomorrow,” said Phil Undercuffler, director of strategy for OutBack Power. “GridZero helps users balance their energy use and reduce grid dependence, while Advanced Battery Charge capabilities allow for specific charging profiles with emerging battery technologies. Combined, these technologies create a resilient system that gives buyers the confidence to invest in solar today.”

OutBack Power’s Radian inverters with GridZero technology provide the perfect balance between utility power and stored renewable energy. By allowing a home or business to satisfy most of its power needs with renewable sources, grid-supplied power is only used when demand spikes. While the Radian inverter remains connected to the grid, dependence on utility power can be reduced to zero. This creates a future-perfect solution particularly in dynamic energy environments such as those in Hawaii, California and many others where government incentives and utility buy-back policies of surplus renewably generated electricity are continually changing.

OutBack’s Advanced Battery Charge profile provides further return for consumers on solar power and energy storage systems by incorporating charger settings for advanced battery technologies. System owners can now leverage charging profiles for lithium-ion, aqueous-ion, flow, fuel-cell, and other battery types now reaching the market, or they have the ability to opt for a different chemistry later, depending upon their energy needs.

OutBack Power Unveils GridZero Energy Balancing

OutBack Power Unveils GridZero Energy Balancing, Advanced Battery Charging to Maximize Solar Power Investments

Future-perfect technology in new Radian inverters helps installers meet evolving needs of solar power customers

Arlington, Wash. – February 27, 2013 – OutBack Power Technologies, Inc., a designer and manufacturer of advanced power electronics for renewable energy, backup power and mobile applications, today announced that three newly available additions to its Radian family of inverters will include GridZero energy balancing technology to ensure users get the most out of their solar power and energy storage investments, regardless of how incentives, utility policies and grid rates might shift. The new Radians and a fourth existing Radian, all designed for global markets, now also feature Advanced Battery Charge profiles for compatibility with lithium-ion and other advanced battery chemistries coming into wider usage, as well as lead-acid. Together, OutBack Power Radian inverters’ GridZero and advanced battery charging capabilities eliminate buyer uncertainty caused by changes in energy policy and give buyers the confidence to invest in solar today with a “future-perfect” system.

The new Radians announced today include the GS8048A and GS4048A, 8-kilowatt and 4-kilowatt inverters designed for North, Central and Latin American markets, as well as the GS3548E, a 3.5 kilowatt inverter for Europe, Asia and other global markets, designed with GridZero and Advanced Battery Charge features. These inverters represent future-perfect installation solutions for dynamic utility environments, including those in California, Hawaii and many other locations where governments are changing solar incentives or utilities are modifying buy-back policies of surplus renewably generated electricity. In these scenarios, GridZero functionality ensures that users can store renewably generated power for future use and prioritize consumption, effectively “zeroing-out the load on the grid” while using it when needed to meet surges and spikes in demand.

“Commercial and residential customers want to know that the PV systems they buy today will deliver tomorrow, regardless of how policies change,” said Phil Undercuffler, director of strategy for OutBack Power. “GridZero ensures they can intelligently balance stored energy and utility power, so that smaller, more cost-effective systems will deliver superior performance and reduce overall grid dependency, while eliminating the solar variability that utility companies say is impacting the grid.”

OutBack’s Advanced Battery Charge profile further maximizes the investment in solar power and energy storage by incorporating charger settings for advanced battery technologies. Installers can coordinate specific charging profiles for lithium-ion, aqueous-ion, flow, fuel-cell, and other battery types now reaching the market.

Expanding the range of the already successful GS8048 and GS7048E 8kW and 7kW Radian Series family, the newest Radian sizes address installer needs to suit varying voltage standards and electrical load requirements in emerging countries, and provide advanced grid management options for those regions that may not support full grid-interactive operation. All models support AC coupling through a compatible OutBack Power load center to provide a cost-effective path for upgrading or retrofitting existing grid-tied systems with energy storage capability.
