OutBack’s Radian Series Inverter/Chargers to be Featured At Solar Power International
October 18th, 2011
Download AttachmentArlington, Wash. (October 18, 2011) –OutBack Power Technologies, Inc., a member of The Alpha Group, will display its New Radian Series Inverter/Charger in the OutBack Power Booth No. 701 at this year’s Solar Power International Expo.
OutBack is a brand leader in extreme-quality, mission-critical “balance of system” components, which transform solar-generated electricity into useable power for residential and commercial installations. As that industry expands, the needs of solar system integrators and installers are rapidly evolving as well.
OutBack is responding by configuring its acclaimed line of components into pre-assembled systems and giving installers the best of both worlds: OutBack quality in a time-saving package. The Radian Series Inverter/Charger, along with OutBack’s new Integrated Battery Rack System, represents a standardized solution built from the industry’s most proven technology and materials in the field of renewable energy management and storage.
The Radian Series Inverter/Charger is designed from the ground up to simplify the design and installation of grid-interactive and stand-alone power systems. It is a powerful tool in delivering the independence and security in renewable energy needed to ensure the success of distributors and installers. “I’ve been able to trust OutBack Power for years, and the Radian Series Inverter/Charger takes their product line, performance and reliability to a new level,” said David Katz, founder and chief technology officer of AEE Solar. “We’re already seeing significant demand for it, and expect this line will help accelerate our sales and customer growth in the months to come.”
“The Radian Series Inverter/Charger is a true innovation in the off-grid and grid-interactive markets,” said Phil Undercuffler, director of product management and strategy for OutBack Power. “We’re excited by the response and orders we’ve already received for this product with our partners and distributors.”
The Radian Series Inverter/Charger is backed by OutBack Power’s reputation of quality, with low failure rates, built-in redundancy, and an established design with simplified interface that makes it reliable and easy to use. And because all products are designed, engineered and manufactured in the USA, availability and turnaround of needed parts and service is best-in-class.
Other key features of the Radian Series Inverter/Charger include:
• Grid-interactive and stand-alone capability in the same package
• 8000 watts of continuous power
• 120/240V split-phase power
• Dual AC inputs
• Flexible design for systems between 8 and 80 kW
• Built on OutBack Power’s core FX FET board technology
In-field and remote customer service support further minimizes “windshield time” for distributors and installers, furthering OutBack’s reputation for no-hassle problem solving and fast turnaround.
The Radian Series is now available for order, and initial demand has exceeded early expectations. For more information on OutBack Power and its products, contact the OutBack Power sales team at Sales@OutBackPower.com.

Background: First Radian Users See Marked Performance Improvement
It all started with a preview demonstration and a simple bet. Eric Johnson runs Johnson Brothers Construction, specializing in timber frame construction in the remote hills above Potter Valley, California. With no utility power to his sites, Johnson had begrudgingly accepted the hassle of running just one machine at a time on his 15kW diesel generator. However, this all changed when Johnson deployed OutBack Power's new Radian Series Inverter/Charger.
The Radian Series provides a powerful, easy-to-install, easy-to-maintain and easy-to-use solution for energy requirements of any size, anywhere, whether grid-interactive, back-up or off-grid power is required. The Radian Series also allowed Johnson, for the first time ever, to run multiple machines at once, increasing his productivity, output and profitability while actually lowering his costs.
"It was clear in the first few minutes of seeing the Radian Series in action that we were going to see a marked increase in performance in our shop", said Eric Johnson, owner of Johnson Brothers Construction. "OutBack's reputation for quality and service was evident."
Towards the end of the demonstration, Johnson asked OutBack representatives just how many of his machines he could run at once. So they turned on one. Then another. Then another.
"We decided to see how many tools we could run at the same time before overloading the inverter," said OutBack’s Phil Undercuffler. "Long story short, we were able to start and run everything he owned, and still weren't yet at capacity." For the record, that included 13 horsepower of inductive motor loads, including a variety of table saws, planers and air compressors.
Truly Customer Focused
OutBack Power engineers conducted in-depth interviews with distributors, integrators and installers to develop the Radian Series with the right features and benefits. The Radian Series Inverter/Charger is backed by OutBack Power's reputation of quality, with low failure rates, built-in redundancy, and an established design with simplified interface that makes it reliable and easy to use. And because all products are designed, engineered and manufactured in the USA, availability and turnaround of needed parts and service is best-in-class.
What makes the Radian Series such a powerful solution?
Basic grid-tied systems can sell back power from a renewable energy source, but only grid-interactive systems can power the load if the grid fails. The Radian Series Inverter/Charger's dual AC inputs also provide the flexibility to connect to the grid and recharge the batteries from a generator, offering owners a continuous power supply, even if emergency conditions last a week or more. "It's a beast. The new Radian Series goes way beyond anything else on the market," said Jeff Oldham from Regenerative SOLutions.
Plus, the system is completely scalable. The 120/240V output integrates directly into standard home wiring, while the modular, parallel architecture combined with OutBack's robust HUB Communications Manager provides the ability to build a system to power nearly any load imaginable.
The inverter and charger functions are already configured making installation as easy as plugging in a refrigerator. Field trials have shown that installation takes half as much time as other comparable solutions. The modular design minimizes emergency service calls by allowing the system to be brought back online at reduced power in the case of a power module failure.
