I need some confirmation/feedback on my system please

Postby zimsolar on Fri Oct 16, 2015 6:15 am

Hi all,

I have the following system:

Outback FlexPower 1 (GVFX3048, FlexNet DC, Mate2, Hub, FM80 charge controller)
9 x Solarworld Sunmodule 230W panels (30V mpv, 60 cell)
24 x Hoppecke 7OPzS 2V 730Ah batteries

My system is 48V and the mains supply is 230VAC. The power utility is unreliable and we have sporadic power cuts so the primary purpose of the system is to be sort-of off-grid but with the ability to fall back on mains power (if its working) to charge batteries during the rainy season. Maybe that's a backup system then? :???: Also if I tried to sell power to the utility there would be an almighty explosion somewhere! I think most of the hardware in use by the utility dates back to the 1940s. The system was set up by someone who was very competent and knowledgeable at the time (2 1/2 years ago) but is now unreachable.

Anyway, a major requirement of the system is that it should switch over to mains supply when the batteries fall below a threshold voltage. Enabling HBX mode is just not taking - it insists on dropping back to mains no matter the SOC of the batteries. I have attached all of the MATE settings here

if someone could please take a look and let me know what I need to change?

Sorry I can not help on HBX, But I notice your charge voltage & time are apparently way to low, Please confirm your absorb voltage & time in both your inverter & your charge controller,

Tim

Hi Tim
Thanks for your quick response. I can confirm that the settings in the spreadsheet are from the system. Or are you asking me to check somewhere other than the MATE for these settings? Excuse my ignorance, despite having had the system in for a while, I'm still a real noob at RE.
Cheers.

Hi Tim,
To confirm, I have just read the settings on the MATE as follows:

FX/CHGR
Absorb setpoint 54.8vdc
Absorb time 1 hr
Float setpoint 54.4vdc
Float time 1 hr
Refloat 50vdc
Eq 57.6vdc

CC/CHGR settings reflect the same absorb and float as FX/CHGR.

I hope that's the confirmation you were after?

It "should" be right, But if you have a few mins, Could you check the settings on the charge controller it-self, absorb voltage and time,

On the charge controller itself, it says:
Current limit 80A
Absorbing 54.8
Float 54.4

Tim, can you advise what would be the correct settings for the charge voltage and time?
Thanks.

Got any links to battery manual for confirmation ? But more "normal" settings would be around 57.6v & 3+ hours for absorb,

You're absolutely right. After reading the manual, which is what I should have done before posting here, even though I don't really understand most of it #-o I can see that the absorb voltage is max 2.4V per cell = 57.6V for the bank. I have set the absorb voltage to that for 3 hours and the EQ voltage the same on both the inverter and charger. I left the float voltage at 54.4V.

Let's hope this fixes my HBX issue although that could easily be related to another incorrect setting

With respect to the absorb time, it is also good to know how long it usually takes for the absorb charge going into the battery to drop to ~1-2% of your battery capacity (so ~7 to 15 amps for your battery bank).
If it usually takes longer than 3 hours to reach this then you may need to increase your absorb period to suit.

Do you have a hydrometer ? As Sandy says it can be longer than 3 hrs, To get it "right" A hydrometer will be a good friend

Ok it's on the shopping list for Monday
Thanks for the input so far Tim and Sandy, I really appreciate it.
If there are any other settings in my MATE spreadsheet that are glaringly incorrect please let me know!
Cheers.
