Tractor PTO Generator

Post by AllPawDrive » Thu Aug 20, 2020 8:58 am

Anyone have any experience with PTO generators for off grid power? Pros, cons?

The tractor purchase is a given for the property I’m building on.

If I could remote start the tractor with a signal from the Radian that would work quite well. My quick search doesn’t show a tractor with remote start capability. Probably be an aftermarket addition.

The tractor isn’t as fuel efficient as a diesel genset but the difference is negligible compared to the cost of a second diesel engine.

Thanks,

Dave

I have a Kubota tractor that I use about every other day with a variety of implements to maintain 150 acres. I would find it to be a PIA to unhook an implement from the draw bar or 3-pt hitch, hook up a generator (mechanically & electrically) every time that I came back from some task or the opposite when I when out to do something else with the tractor.

It is a good option as a backup to your prime generator but I would not make it my primary.

Good point on the PIA.

My plan has been to use the tractor as a dependable backup but I started thinking “what if...”

The winter is when I’ll need my generator the most and the winter is when I’ll be plowing my mile long “driveway”.

I agree, good as backup but not primary, especially your winter.
I think you would also need 2 remote start configurations, start tractor & start generator. I can’t start my tractor with the PTO engaged.

I just need to trade my 50 acres of ocean front PEI for 50 acres of ocean front Hawaii and avoid the winters.

LOL, but you’d still need generator. But, if my generator needs to run it’s due to rainy wx and I don’t tractor in rainy wx normally.
Not ocean front, but oceanview 20 acres just up mountain from me

There are probably more dogs than people on Hawaii Island.

Yes, but the quarantine program is better developed and stricter than for people. No rabies here.

That's it! Let's get the vetrinarians involved in screening the two-legged visitors.
