Mate 3 Issues

My second Mate 3 is flaking out. I'm back to using a Mate 2 to monitor the system. The Mate 2 has been old-faithful - never a problem, ever. It's acting like it doesn't have power enough to run. It boots, starts its power on self-test, then reboots. This goes on and on forever. I think I need a new ...

Re: SOC suddenly jumps to 100%

I thought you could tweak AGS to only turn on when the battery voltage was below some limit for 2 hours. The real problem is the Mate doesn't know when the sun is going to come back up. It should be possible to make something with an Arduino that tracks the time with an RTC chip and senses the batte...

Re: OPTICS RE - More Info?

A former OutBack employee mentioned it to me and I've been unable to find any further information either. It mentions being able to CONTROL your system, which tells me they are going to change the topology of the Mate3 so the Ethernet microcontroller can talk to the main microcontroller or come out ...

Re: Sudden GVFX3648 interference with Enphase

I had a spectrum analyzer at the house, trying to solve issues with 110kHz PLC communications interference for Pantheon (SolarBridge) microinverters. There was a very distinct spike around 114kHz, which was the 6th harmonic. My guess would be that the temperature has changed and whatever harmonic is...

Re: costco batt

Most of the generic golf cart batteries available at places like CostCo, Sam's, Wal-Mart, etc. aren't as well-designed as batteries from the top-tier manufacturers. You =can= get remarkably good service from lower-cost batteries, at the expense of greater maintenance -- do NOT ignore your batteries ...

Re: AC coupling fault handling

Having relay contacts weld shut is a very real possibility, which is why you should only use heavier-duty contactors for the grid-tied system to grid-interactive system connection. For best results, there should be multiple levels of protection. The first line of protection should be a diversion loa...

Re: Time management - how to solve DST?

Andrew,

True, that. But as you've note above, people persist in using Mate 3's for external timing events. Making them maintain time better would be a good thing, whether it was by either of us resetting their time externally or OutBack adding an NTP client.

I'm not sure those recommendations are all that good, unless you are utterly and completely meticulous about Absorb time and have a flawless set of interconnections between all the batteries, series and parallel.

Re: Time management - how to solve DST?

Part of the joys of dealing with anything that isn't a high stratum (low number) NTP server -- clock drift is HORRIBLE in the microcontroller world, and most of the Real Time Clock chips have errors that can get out of hand pretty fast without something to keep the clock synchronized to reality. A f...

Mate 3's work great with VFX3648s. I have their G-series cousin (a twin stack of GVFX 3648s) on a Mate 3 and it works like a charm.

Re: Radian dropping its AC output. Why?

I think I have found the problem. The inverter status mode was OFF during the outage. Probably it was in search mode rather than ON and whenever my refrigerator and small chest freezer happened to cycle off at the same time, the search mode decided there was no load so it powered down. When I then ...

Re: Time management - how to solve DST?

Well ... for the Mate 3 the answer is for OutBack to add a NTP client to the firmware. My Mate 3 now thinks it's 9:15AM (it's 9:21AM). I didn't adjust it for DST since my last post here back in December, it just gained enough time that it is closer to correct than the last time I looked. That's why ...

Re: Stop Sell Reason 0

Todd, 131VAC L-N ain't all that bad. Those crazy Europeans use 230/400 3-phase -- that's 230 volts line-to-neutral ;) PV systems run high AC volts because you have voltage rise on your side. If the utility is aiming for 120VAC, after a few volts drop in the service wiring, you're going to make up th...

Andrei,

You'd have to disconnect from the grid BEFORE the batteries were full. Then they'd finished charging. There are Mate modes which can do this.

Re: Mixed Panels and 2 Flexmax 80 Controllers

Two comments -- First, the proposed organization looks mostly okay. There are too many of them to make complete sense, but so long as the current through each string is approximately the same, you should be in good shape. Second, the current price for PV modules is so low that it really may be cheap...

Re: Experimenting with active tracking.

Some people have mentioned DC-to-DC converters that may support the amount of power the motors would require. My approach for all things DC-to-DC is to use one of the small Morningstar MPPT controllers as a 48VDC-to-12VDC buck converter, then put a small-ish battery on the output side. The advantage...

Re: Inverter (VFX3648) power consumption.

The 500A / 50mv shunts are plenty good, though I forget if the TriMetric supports them. I think it's mostly limited to 100A / 100mv. You can get other sizes and ratios from Alt E-Store (the supplier I use for 'loose parts'). The inverter tare load is around what was stated. They do start off with re...

You'd have to use one of the Mate modes which cause the inverter to disconnect from the grid based on time of day or battery state of charge.

Re: Stop Sell Reason 0

Todd, I'd get a high-quality DVM and measure the actual voltage at the service panel, then calibrate the inverter to that voltage. I had "high voltage" issues when I first installed my system and that was the cause. I now have 6kW total and I easily sell much of that without getting up against the l...

I did just verify that, inspite of there only being one FNDC firmware version in production, the behavior that's being described didn't happen yet again. That's why this "undocumented logic" works. Yeah, except outback told me (and I quote): Net amp hours > 0 AND Battery volts < ( Absorb setpoint - 0.5 ) AND Average net amps (to the battery) > 0 The voltage has to be BELOW the absorb set point. It sure is easy to get the net amp hours above zero and...

Why not simply use the FLA batteries as a 12 volt bank?

Re: Inverter (VFX3648) power consumption.

OutBack inverters are a lot more efficient than that. Once you subtract tare losses, and get above very low power levels, the OutBack inverters are 90+% efficient. 240 watts AC (2 amps @ 120 volts) is still fairly low power level. I have a lot of respect for the guys at Bogart Engineering (the peopl...
